KSFY Viewer Tip Leads To Hit And Run Arrest

A tip from a KSFY viewer led Sioux Falls Police to 29-year-old Eric Oldre, who they believe was the driver involved in an early morning hit and run.

A tip from a KSFY viewer leads Sioux Falls Police to a 29-year-old man, suspected in an overnight hit and run.
Only Action News was there as cops took the man into custody this morning.

Police believe that man, 29-year-old Eric Oldre, was driving drunk when he hit a pedestrian just after 1 this morning at 41st and Western in Sioux Falls. That pedestrian is now fighting for his life.

The pedestrian is identified as Beau Brady, a 21-year-old USD student from Yankton who is hospitalized at Sanford .
A handful of witnesses provided the first nuggets of information Sioux Falls Police would need to find the hit and run driver. Sergeant Matt Burns with Sioux Falls Police told us early this morning; "The vehicle description is a smaller black 2 door car or a small black car possibly a Pontiac."

Police passed that description onto Action News and we passed it on to you.
About 8 this morning, a KSFY viewer called us, saying a car matching the description was in her apartment complex parking lot on south Louise Avenue.
We called police: officers arrived, found the car...which had sustained damage...then found the driver...Eric Oldre..and arrested him. Sioux Falls Police Lieutenant Jerome Miller told us late this morning; "It's tips like this that solve crimes like this. Every citizen is another set of eyes out there for us to solve these things."

Eric Oldre is facing charges of vehicular battery, hit and run and 3rd offense DWI.
Beau Brady remains hospitalized at Sanford tonight.

Every human is responsible for their own actions PERIOD. If you drink, don't drive.

People do not just simply deserve what happens to them regardless of their actions. You cannot fight fire with fire, you cannot cut off the hand of a thief, or hit back the striker. Eye for an eye or punishment imposed equaling a wrong action never really changes anything. That mentality is what keeps the pendulum from stopping.

the problem is that there is no kind of decent rehab for these folks WHILE they are incarcerated for their actions. that, in my opinion, is why they are HABITUAL. I have close family member who has been there, done that, and in her own words "there is NO help for these people while they are serving their time". We need to correct the problem before they get thrown back into society and are forced to fend for themselves-they are addicts and it is a disease. Just one suggestion.

What I find scary is that we have had 3 major drinking related accidents in 2 weeks. Each of those accidents involved a person with multiple DUIs. What system we have for stopping drinking and driving isn't working. I have no suggestions except for people to take responsibility for their OWN actions. If you choose to drink...don't drive. If you need help, get help. The court and your family can't do it for you.

Eric Oldre is an old friend of mine. I could never stick up for or in anyway support his actions. I am saddened for the person he hit and his family. Eric is a great guy who has made some very, very poor decisions. What happens to him is what he deserves. I just wish I could have been there to stop him.

If you have to drink yourself "BLITZO" then get a ride or a cab home--DO NOT DRIVE!!..There are bars who take drunks home or pay for a cab and put it on the drunk's tab..The drunk will also pay extra for any cab mess he/she creates! I hope the best for the victim and the worst for the low-rent drunk driver!! wesriver

I can say say this though; everybody knows and understands the consequences of breaking laws that are put in place for just reasons. Yet people break them, why? It is because laws get treated like games by a lot of people. All you have to do is not get caught. We need to teach ourselves and our future generations values by leading that have a different perspective. And it has to be done by everyone. School shootings haven't always existed nor have terrorists. I hope that makes sense.

There are a lot of ways to address this question at hand. It's interesting though that for as down looked upon heavy and habitual drinking is, and yet there has to be at least 30 or so establishments for drinking in Sioux Falls and that is not including the stores where you service ourselves to drink at home. It is in our culture to drink. We learn it as a means to deal and cope. It is an unhealthy and ineffective alternate remedy to take off part of the edge of stress. I cannot say in 500 words

food for thought, what would be your suggestions, because what has been tried so far isn't working.

To the mom, I agree that these types of actions shouldn't be played out some commonly, but imprisonment never will change the actions of our future generations. Problems like these are a societal issue. In other words, if our answer to resolving issues like this is to lock people up for the crimes they commit, then we better get ready to keep building more and more prisons for the rest of life on Earth.

3rd offense DUI?! I am so sick of hearing about stuff like this. I am SO TIRED of this mentality that people have of how they should be able to do whatever they want, no matter who has to pay the price. If this indeed the gentleman who hit the pedestrian, and his is found guilty, off to the Pen for a long long time. 3rd offense and you never ought to have a liscence or be out of jail in my opinion
