Salvation Army Angel Tree Program Now Online

The Salvation Army has been providing Christmas gifts for children in need through the Angel Tree program for about forty years.

Now, for the first time people can donate to the Angel Tree program online. The Salvation Army has partnered with JC Penney's to make the program possible.

Last year the Salvation Army was able to provide almost 500 toys but organizers decided with many people doing their Christmas shopping online it's time to extend the opporunity to give to those in need by just clicking on the mouse.

Patricia Myers participated in the angel tree program last christmas. Her eight-year-old daughter Rachel received presents she might not have otherwise.

"She was able to get a lot of toys. Last year I only worked part-time. I was a full time student so I could only afford a few gifts and it helped. She was able to get some extra clothes and a couple of books and some extra toys."

Now, instead of heading out to the store those who want to give can go to the JC Penney website and request an angel.

"I like the online idea. A lot of people when it gets cold and the snow gets really deep, they don't want to get out and they don't want to go but online you can do it from the privacy of your own home."

Plenty of childrens' needs are already listed in the Aberdeen area and the staff at the Salvation Army like to see those Christmas wishes fulfilled. Captain Michael Cripe says he is glad the online giving program is now available.

"When I see parents break into tears when they come to get their gifts when they couldn't provide for their children for Christmas. They were wondering how in the world they were going to do that. To be able to have given that is a wonderful feeling."

You can go to the JC Penney website at jcp.com and click on angel giving tree or you can contact the Salvation Army at 225-7410.

The Salvation Army is in need of volunteer bell ringers this season.
