The Secret Success of South Dakota Vineyards

The wine business in South Dakota is truly a growing industry.

In just a few years the number of wineries in the state has doubled, offering a taste of South Dakota for all to enjoy.

Don South is a co-owner of one of around 13 wineries in the state of South Dakota, and says, "We can do fruit wines between four and six months from start to finish...so we're always doing something."

He starts the year by pruning the vines in February for the growth season.

"We get into summertime and we spray for weeds and herbicides, pesticides, fungicides to protect the vines."

Then they break out the nets in August to protect the grapes from the birds, and normally harvest from late August into September.

According to South, "September really saved us, it finally warmed up and we got some nice days that helped us get the harvest finished off."

The vines are winter hardy, tried and proven by a facility in Minnesota.

The grapes make a variety of wines, all with a local flavor.

A variety home to South Daktoa....Rhubarb Wine.

"People may not, with the economy, take a five day vacation but they'll take a couple days and visit a piece of Napa Valley right here in South Dakota."

You can even get a South Dakota wine passport.

Just complete a tasting at each vineyard in the state to receive a unique gift of appreciation from the state's winemakers.

With all the wineries in SD, why did you only feature one and turn it in to an "ad" for them. There are other more established, reliable and competent people than the one you featured.
