Sioux Falls-Harrisburg Sewer Deal Delayed
Sewage ponds in Harrisburg, SD The Sioux Falls City Council has delayed until Nov. 16 a vote on a proposed wastewater treatment agreement with Harrisburg. The proposal would enable Harrisburg to connect to Sioux Falls' $40 million east-side sewer system. The city has similar agreements with Brandon, Renner and the Prairie Meadows Sanitary Sewer District. Some developers and Council members say they were caught off-guard by the proposal. Companies building in the area are paying about $4,600 an acre to hook up to the system, and some have questioned whether the fees Harrisburg would pay are fair. The Council must make a decision before Nov. 18, when Harrisburg will be closing on a loan tied to its $10 million sewer system upgrade. If Harrisburg does not meet certain deadlines it could lose out on federal stimulus money for the project. © 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
