Street Gangs Moving In on Sioux Falls

By KSFY Staff

The Sioux Falls Police Department Street Crime Task Force is constantly working to figure out what street gangs are trying to infiltrate our city, and to prevent the gangs already here from growing.

Sioux Falls Police Officer Cullen McClure says, "Recently we've seen a rise in their organization to robberies and home invasions and crimes that are a more violent nature."

He's assigned to the Street Crimes Task Force and says there are about 37 street gangs in the city, amounting to around 365 members.

"I'd say our most active is gangster disciples which here in Sioux Falls is primarily a Native American based gang."

Officer McClure says higher concentrations of gang activity occur in the Whittier Park neighborhood and the east side of Sioux Falls.

Members range in age from 11 up to around age 40.

"A lot of our gang members seem to come from a poor family structure and they're looking for comfort and safety and acceptance of the gang to provide the family structure for them."

Officer McClure says the biggest way to deter your kids from gangs is to know who their friends are, and what they're up to when you're not around.

Are you kidding me? Some common sense in these posts would be nice. using profanities, moving, not shopping locally, because of a tidbit on the argus about a small group of fallen ndividuals. "Recently we've seen a rise in their organization to robberies and home invasions and crimes that are a more violent nature." I believe if you go anywhere in the U.S. right now, you will have a "rise" in activity. So if you want to take you $100,000 job and leave, I know a few people who will take it.:)

It is a societal/legal problem; don't blame the Indian or reservations...Indians were here long before the Sioux Falls gang problem. Don't be ignorant. Was it due to Hurricane Katrina and the goodness of SD citizens welcoming displaced people? Is it due to the lack of enforcement of illegal immigration laws? Why is it people of color get blamed for society's ills, esp. since it was white people who started the first gang? Whatever, we are all part of the "human race". Violence is not the answer.

I live in the downtown area and despite the sirens....early morning shootings..I still enjoy my neighborhood during the day. Its wonderful to stop for a tribe to cross the street(children in tow) at 8am, watching them stumble to the neighborhood Munchies to get their early morning drink on. All joking aside ...please pay attention to your neighbors you might have to ID them later. We have not become Minneapolis but if you only saw what I see in one day.

Sioux Falls has changed alot since I moved here 8-16-1993. The people in certain ares are good. Their are people that are crappy here in Sioux Falls. The problem isn't the laws...It is the judge's that don't ENFORCE the laws on the books.

So they are primarily Native American gangs. Who come from a broken homes. Wow the reservation system is such a value asset to S.Dak. Get rid of the reservations, make them work for a living, and then they can beoome family with the rest of us. I would call our family.. Middle Class tax payers....

#1 City in the Nation only a short time ago... To new gangland territory. Great job Sioux Falls. Way to open your big mouth and attract the scum. My friends and I sure don't spend anytime downtown hitting the bars anymore. So there is a loss to the bars, restaraunts, and taxi cab drivers. Yes I said taxi cab drivers.. We are responsible people. We like a safe community so we cabbed it everywhere.. We did our part, SFalls its time to do yours....

I don't feel safe with my family being in S.Falls anymore so that it why we are moving out. So S.Falls you lost family that earns $100,000, has 3 kids in your school system, never shopped in Minneapolis - always did my shopping locally.. We are moving to an area that does not have any "gangs", far less illegal immigrants, and not a soup kitchen that only attacts the poor from other communities to come to S.Falls. Sorry but good luck to the honest hard working people in S.Falls - we are gone..

Why even refer to them as "gangs"? That sounds tough and they really are helpless individually without their buddies and guns. They are Losers, Low-Lifes, Bottom-feeders, sucking the life out of beautiful cities and costing the taxpayers big bucks. Call them what they are.I think the average citizen could help deter these lazy bumpkins by looking out their windows occasionally and calling in suspicious activity.I am still thinking of terms for grown children who are still playing clubhouse...
