He is being remembered tonight as a "gentle giant."
27 year old Gabe Koenigsfeld of Sioux Falls died Tuesday when an embankment collapsed on him at a construction site in Dakota Dunes.
Tonight, we know the status of the investigation into his death.
We were also able to speak with Koenigsfeld's brother about what type of man he was.
Over the last day we've been able to learn quite a bit about Gabe Koenigsfeld. He worked at J & J Concrete Incorporated, based in Tea. He's a former football player for South Dakota State University and by all accounts he was a devoted family man and he was looking forward to the birth of his first child 5 months from now.
Gabe Koenigsfeld was a defensive end for the SDSU Jackrabbits from 2002 through 2005.
While at SDSU, he met his wife, Stephanie Bolden, who was a player on the Lady Jacks basketball team which won a national title in 2003.
They married and moved to sioux falls to begin their life together and a baby was on the way.
"He was very much looking forward to being a father and was really ready to begin that next phase in his life." Gabe's brother Nate says his brother excelled at everything he did.
On Tuesday, Gabe was working on this construction site in Dakota Dunes when an embankment gave way, trapping him, resulting in fatal injuries.
J & J Concrete released a statement saying "He was a phenomenal worker and a great friend of the family. He will be a big loss to the company. Our thoughts are with the rest of the workers and his family."
The investigation into Koenigsfeld's death continues.
The Union County Sheriff says they're calling his death an accident, meaning no one did anything intentional to kill him.
But federal OSHA investigators based out of Bismarck, North Dakota will soon begin working the case to see if any type of negligence lead to his death.
