Opponents to a planned South Dakota ballot initiative to legalize embryonic stem cell research are turning up the heat.

South Dakota's "Family Policy Council" is opposed to the idea saying it requires the destruction of human life and hasn't been proven to provide any type of cure for any disease or illness.

On Thursday, the group sponsored a speech by Bioethicist Doctor David Prentice who told us, "What I'm most concerned about is people understanding if we want to help the patients, we should be focused on the adult stem cells. It's already helping lots of people. We should be putting resources more behind that."

The group "South Dakotans For Lifesaving Cures" says embryonic stem cells are more flexible and useful in medical research and they're gathering signatures to legalize embryonic research in South Dakota.
