Examining Crime Statistics for Sioux Falls

For a city of its size, the Sioux Falls Police Department says Sioux Falls is a very safe community with a low crime rate.

But as the city continues to grow...so do the crime numbers.

And police want you to know they're there for all to see.

Public Information Officer Sam Clemens says, "The more people you have the more crime you have, that being said, we have a safe community, our crime numbers are pretty low."

The crime statistics for Sioux Falls are available to anyone at anytime online.

While overall the rates is low...there are some interesting numbers.

There's 1 burglary in the city every 12 hours. 1 stolen vehicle every 33 hours. 1 rape every 3 days. And 1 homicide every 92 days.

"That's the most serious crime we have, homicide and to have such low numbers really speaks well of the community," says Clemens.

Looking back...a total of 4 homicides in 2008..and only 2 in 2007.

But while the numbers may be low, the crime is still here.

Clemens says, "We just wanna have people have a chance to find what we're doing, how safe the community is, the type of crime we have....we do still have crime that's here."
