The army psychiatrist charged in the November 5th shooting spree at Fort Hood had his first court hearing on Saturday.

The hearing was to determine if Maj. Nidal Hasan will be placed in pre-trial confinement, which usually means jail. The proceedings were held in his hospital room. At the pentagon, Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced an investigation into extremism throughout the military. The 45-day review requires the services to probe how they can prevent any future incidents like the massacre at Fort Hood.
