Lake County Man Shoots Feral Pig

Tools

A Lake County man this month shot a feral pig, an animal usually found in the southern United States.

Chad Aker says the animal was first sighted about six weeks ago by farmers chopping corn for silage.

Aker found the pig on his property about 14 miles northwest of Madison near sunset on Nov. 2 and brought down the animal with a rifle.

Floyd Demaray of Ramona, who is Aker's father-in-law, says others had seen the wild pig. One was a farmer driving home from Sunday church services about a mile from Aker's home.

Feral pigs are more common in the South. Texas, Florida, Mississippi, Georgia and Louisiana, as well as California, have some of the five largest hunting areas in the nation.

Up in this area (NE SD) anything like that I would guess started out as a stray pig from a farm or feedlot. I'd like to see a wild pig make it to SD from down south.

When I saw this headline I thought it was about those fetal pigs I disected in 9th grade. Also you shouldn't be allowed to use the internet if you can't use "Nip it in the BUD" correctly

We need to shoot everyone of these. We do not want these things here. They are nasty. Wold rather have mountain lions than these things. Need to nip this in the but ASAP. Open season on feral hogs year round.

It could be quite a shock to go outside and see one of those critters rooting up a sandbox! The poor thing must have been a little brain damaged, heading north at this time of year. How big are they? Is it common for them to wander around alone? Have they been sighted in SD before? It seems that the story could have offered more info.
