Late Start Supporters Say Public Vote Is Possible

Backers of a plan to start public school in Sioux Falls after Labor Day say they are ready to bring the issue to a public vote if the Sioux Falls School Board doesn't take any action.

By Brian Allen KSFY

They say if the Sioux Falls School District doesn't push back the start date for school, they'll bring the issue to a public vote.

This year, public school started on August 17th.

This group wants school to start after Labor Day, this year that would have been September 8th.

And they say if the school board won't help them make that change, they'll take their case to the voters.

The message to school board members was unmistakable.

"We have a right to make decisions about our kids and we want to be heard about it and we want the people we elected to listen to us." Rhonda Lockwood is one of several Sioux Falls parents who came to the board meeting, armed with 3,000 letters from parents who want the school year to start after Labor Day, saying Sioux Falls kids get short changed out of three weeks of summer time and family time.
This group says if the school board doesn't make a change, they will by taking the idea to a public vote. Late start supporter Stephen Williamson told the school board; "We think we can get the signatures and we think we can put it up for a vote.....because of our motivation we would win the election."

This group has been working on this idea for months, consulting parents and teachers, looking to build support.
Paul Jennings has been following it from the start and says if school is delayed, it would throw off semester testing schedules and potentially hurt kids who are already struggling in school. "If they have to wait 2 weeks after christmas to take their tests, they surely would not be in the passing category."

The school board did not make any comment, instead referring it to the district's school calendar committee.
Mom Wendy McDonnel is a member of the group supporting the change and says they're researching how to bring this to a public vote. "If it's a local vote which we've been advised that it is, we're more than prepared to do that."

It's anticipated the school district's calendar committee would next meet sometime after the first of the year.

TJ - if the start date truly doesn't matter, why not let them start later in order to enjoy the summer, while it is hot out. Rather then during May-mid June when it is typically too cold do be doing true summer activities.

What does the start date matter? If your like most families both parents work and the kids are left at home or in daycares. So why not let them go to school to learn something.Take your vacations in June or July or if school is so easy for them ,just take them out of school if you need to go somewhere during Late August.

the people who would like the starte date stay the same say the reasoning is because the test scores have imporved. What they did not consider here is there is a lot of factors that go in to this. For example, our school system has change tremendously as a result of the "No Child Left Behind" criteria. I believe this has a bigger impact on the test scores then when the kids are taking a test....just a thought.

not sure what the smoking ban and abortion have to do with this issue... I went to school when we started after labor-day and got straight A's and we always had out tests before X-mas break. You will always have kids who lag behind and those who excel. It doesn't matter how much time you give them. I seriously doubt they are learning more material than we did with those 2 extra weeks

We have a free country but this only supports the sore losers in SD. How many times are we going to vote until we get a REAL result. I am pro smoking ban and pro-choice. Enough is enough.

Comming from someone who started the day after labor day from k-12 I fully support this. The students may have to be in class for another week or two but not enough to cause any problems. To say that taking exams two weeks after christmas will hurt scores is completely untrue. Again speaking from past experience. I do have to say I fullheartedly disagree with the fact that it will go to a vote if denied. It makes me think to the abortion bills and smoking ban which we have successfully shot down
