Results Show Pigs From MN State Fair Have H1N1

By KSFY Staff

Minnesota health officials met last night to discuss preliminary results showing pigs from the state testing positive for H1N1.

Samples were taken from pigs in August and September at the Minnesota state fair. The main concern now for officials is children who may have been exposed to these pigs while at the fair and contracted H1N1. Health officials say more testing will be done to confirm these preliminary results.

Gene Hugoson said, "This is not a food safety issue. The issue here that we're talking about here is that there were some pigs that were tested and there are some that appear to be positive."

Jeff Bender with the Center for Animal Health said, "These pigs were not sick, and they were samples as part of a research project. So the intent was to know what was happening with those pigs at that point in time. Our intention was not to follow pigs out."

Scientists say the reason they are concerned about animals contracting the virus is to prevent a more deadly strain of H1N1. They also want to remind people that there is no risk associated with eating pork.
