Parents Say Rapid City 8-Year-Old Died Of H1N1 Flu

By KSFY Staff

The family of an 8-year-old Rapid City boy says he has died of the H1N1 flu.

The family of third-grader Jack Unkenholz says he died Sunday at a local hospital.

If the death is confirmed, it would be the third in South Dakota attributed to the H1N1 virus.

Jack had Menkes Syndrome, and as a result used a wheel chair and could not speak.

His parents say while their other two children also contracted H1N1. The existing condition Jack had made him too weak to fight off the disease.

They were scheduled to get the vaccination as soon as they came in, something they say came too late.

"Our lives have just evolved together kind of and there's just like a huge, huge void," said the boy's father, Eric Unkenholz.

The state has begun distributing 16-thousand more doses of H1N1 flu vaccine to 280 clinics and hospitals across South Dakota, but officials say they still do not have as much vaccine as they need.
