imageMargaret Hanson, 100, of Viborg, SD passed away Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Viborg.
Funeral services will be 1:30 PM, Monday, November 2, 2009 at the United Methodist Church in Wakonda, SD, with Pastor Mark Gronseth officiating. Burial will follow in the Hurley City Cemetery
Visitation will begin at 4:00 PM, Sunday, November 1, 2009 with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM at the Hansen Funeral Home in Irene, SD.
Margaret Hanson was born to T.C. and Bertha (Polley) Hanson on August 25, 1909 in Canning, S.D. She moved with her parents to Wakonda, SD in 1911 where she graduated from High School in 1927. She attended the University of SD in Vermillion, SD for two years, taught school in Wasta & Belle Fourche, SD for a period of time, then returned to the University where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She then taught music in Highmore, SD and Luverne, MN and finally in the Phoenix Arizona Public School District #1 from 1952 to retirement in 1975. In the meantime, she earned her Master's Degree in Fine Arts from Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ.
After retirement, she and her sister, Vesta, traveled each year, visiting countries in 6 of the 7 continents.
In 1995, Margaret and her sister, who lived in Aberdeen, SD, moved to Viborg, to live in Pioneer Villa, an independent living apartment connected to Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home where she passed away.
Margaret was a life-long member of the Wakonda Methodist Church. She was active in the church wherever she taught, but she retained her membership in the Wakonda church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Lyle, a nephew Steven Hanson, and an infant grand-nephew.
She is survived by her sister, Vesta, 4 nieces, 5 grand-nieces, 3 grand nephews, 19 great grand nieces and nephews; a special cousin, Russell Polley; and several special second cousins.
