Daryl "D.J." Johnson

(June 6, 1927 - October 27, 2009)

Daryl “D.J.” Johnson, 82 of Pierre Died on Tuesday, October 27 at St. Mary’s Hospital Celebration of Life: 2:00 pm Sunday, November 1 at the American Legion Cabin followed by a time of fellowship.

Daryl “DJ” Johnson passed away on October 27th, 2009 at St. Mary’s hospital in Pierre, SD. DJ was born June 6th 1927 to Ward and Grace Johnson in Pierpont, SD. He graduated from Pierpont High School in 1945. He was very athletic in High School and passed up opportunities to farm with his dad on the family farm. DJ was an avid horseman. He was very active in Rodeo and was a successful horse trainer. Later in his life he enjoyed woodworking and redoing antiques. DJ spent the last good years of his life where he found his peace….. fishing. In December 2005 DJ joined his other family at the Golden Living Center in Pierre, SD. He made lots of close friends and held a close bond to the staff, residents and visitors. All that knew DJ, appreciated his sense of humor and views on life.

Grateful to have shared his life, is his wife Barb, his daughters Traci (Mike) Schmitz of Valentine, NE, Kari Scheil of Ft. Pierre, and Mindi (Mike) Vavra of Crookston, NE, his grandchildren Tyler and Holli Schmitz, Danielle, Kaylee, and Seth Vavra, Paula Krueger and special friends, Jill Smeins and Terri Morin.

He is also survived by daughters Kay (Joe) Cameron of Pierpont, SD, Kathy (Butch) Winson of Britton, SD, and son Keith (Veronica) Johnson of Warner, SD. Grandchildren, Paula, Laura, Broderick, Brett, Brandon and Jared, and one great grandson Spencer.
