USD Looks Forward To National Title Game

By Tim Peters

(Kearney, Nebraska) After playing a double overtime game on Wednesday night, the consensus thought that USD would be the team that would show signs of fatigue. But it was the Coyotes who had the energy to advance to the school's first ever National Championship Game.

USD Head Coach Chad Lavin says, "Our kids play that many minutes all the time. Where Delta State is used to running kids in but then all of sudden tonight, Rushing and Boyd played the entire game and they are not used to that where our kids are."

Delta State Head Coach Sandra Rushing said, "We had no answer for them. We faced a lot of athletic teams, but they did a great job of executing and running their offense."

After struggling from the line Wednesday night, the Coyotes were clutch Thursday, hitting 18 of 19 from the charity stripe.

Head Coach Lavin said, "the kids, they've hit big time free throw's all year. We've shot a bad percentage but we've made a lot of clutch free throws."

The Coyotes have been on a mission since the end of last year when they fell in the first round of the North Central Regional, so making it to Saturday's Championship is no surprise to them.

USD Senior Guard Jeana Hoffman said, "I remember even in the spring after last year, we were talking about the run we were able to make and how much talent we had and how much momentum we had going into the season, you know and then when the polls came out and we weren't in the mix, I don't think it ever, we still were never in doubt that we were a team that was going to be there at the end, you know we were going to be playing deep into March."

If fate has anything to do with winning a national championship, then USD might be in luck. 50 years ago the Coyotes captured the school's only basketball championship as the men's team won the national title with a set of twins on their squad. This year's Coyotes has two sets of twins on their roster heading into Saturday's championship showdown.
