CANARIES OUTDUELED BY CATS, 2-0

Fort Worth, TX – The Sioux Falls Canaries (1-1) suffered their first defeat of 2008, getting shutout 2-0 in a pitcher’s duel with the Fort Worth Cats (1-1).

The Cats scored first for the second night in a row when an unearned run put them ahead in the third inning. Willie James reached on a fielding error by Canaries first baseman Patrick Reilly, and scored after back-to-back singles by Brian Fryer and Charles Carter. After three innings, the Cats led 1-0.

Fort Worth extended their lead in the eighth inning, when Carter struck again. This time, Carter took a pitch from Angelo Morales deep to left field for his first homer of the year to give the Cats a 2-0 lead.

Pedro Flores (1-0) pitched seven shutout innings for the Cats allowing just two hits, before turning it over to the bullpen. Brian Martin held the Canaries off the scoreboard in the eighth inning, and Jon Hunton closed it out in the ninth for his first save of the year. Ryan Ford (0-1) was saddled with the loss giving up one unearned run on five hits in six innings of work.

The Canaries and Cats meet again on Saturday night in the third game of the four-game series. The first pitch at LaGrave Field is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
