Carlson Repeats as SDGA Match Play Champ

CARLSON REPEATS AS MATCH PLAY CHAMP
(Aberdeen) Tom Carlson of Sioux Falls successfully defended his Match Play Championship, defeating Tim Kalil of Rapid City 2 and 1 in the 36-hole finale Monday at Moccasin Creek Country Club in Aberdeen.

Carlson was 1 down after 10 holes of the afternoon session, but won the next two holes to take the lead for good. His birdie on the 420-yard 12th hole gave him a 1-up advantage, before stretching the lead to 2 up with a birdie on the 518-yard 14th hole. Carlson closed out the match with three consecutive pars.

Carlson led 2 up after the first 18 holes. The match was all square after nine holes before Kalil, the medalist in this event, birdied the 10th hole for a 1 up lead. Carlson birdied the par-3 13th and the par-5 14th for a 1-up lead, then closed out the morning session with a birdie on the 540-yard 18th hole.
