(Chelsea) Northern State University men's basketball coach Don Meyer was in an accident with a semi-truck at about 5:00 p.m. on Friday, on highway 20 near the small town of Chelsea about 50 miles outside of Aberdeen.

Northern State Athletic Director Bob Olson says Meyer broke his leg and was flown to a hospital in Sioux Falls for vascular surgery. Olson says he spoke briefly to Meyer, and he says the legendary coach was conscious and he expects him to recover. The injuries aren't considered life threatening.

Meyer was on his way to a retreat for the Northern State basketball team, but he was alone at the time of the accident.

According to the Highway Patrol, Meyer was driving west at 5:51 p.m. on SD Highway 20 near Chelsea when he crossed the centerline and struck an eastbound vehicle driven by Donald Carda, 70, of Chelsea.
Carda’s vehicle then struck two other westbound vehicles driven by Tramel Barnes, 18, of Watson, Minn., and Kyle Schwan, 24, of Aberdeen.

A fifth vehicle, driven by Casey Becker, 19, of Beuleh, N.D., entered the ditch to avoid the accident.

Meyer was the only person injured in the accident. All drivers were wearing seatbelts, and alcohol was not involved, according to the release.

Meyer is the second winningest men's collegiate basketball coach in the nation, right behind Bobby Knight.
