Richmond finishes on top of FCS Poll

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Fresh off its national-championship victory over Montana Friday night, Richmond was voted as the No. 1 team in the final 2008 Sports Network FCS Top-25 poll on Monday.

The Spiders, who beat Montana 24-7 in the NCAA Division I Football Championship game at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga, received all 80 first- place votes and 2,000 points.

Richmond had previously been ranked No. 1 for the week of Sept. 22 after James Madison defeated previously top-ranked Appalachian State. But the Spiders lost the following weekend to Villanova to fall from the top spot.

Richmond was ranked No. 7 in the final regular season poll, but the Spiders defeated Eastern Kentucky, No. 2 seed Appalachian State, No. 3 seed Northern Iowa and No. 4 seed Montana to finish 13-3 and win their first national championship.

Montana, which was ranked fifth at the end of the regular season, jumped to No. 2 with 1,903 points. It was the first time since 2004 that the Grizzlies (14-2) had been ranked second in the final poll.

James Madison, which had been ranked No. 1 since Richmond's loss to Villanova, dropped to No. 3 after its 35-27 semifinal-round loss to Montana. It marked the highest finish in the final poll for the Dukes (12-2) since their 2004 national championship season.

Northern Iowa (12-3) remained at No. 4 after ending the season with a 21-20 loss to Richmond in the semifinals.

Appalachian State, which saw its string of three consecutive national championships come to an end with a 33-13 quarterfinal-round loss to Richmond, dropped from second to fifth in the final poll. The Mountaineers (11-3) had been ranked No. 1 in the preseason.

Villanova (10-3) stayed at No. 6 after splitting playoff games with Colgate (a 55-28 victory) and James Madison (a 31-27 loss).

Weber State (10-4) vaulted five places to No. 7 with a win over Cal Poly (49-35) and a loss to Montana (23-13) in the playoffs.

New Hampshire (10-3) moved up two spots to No. 8 after beating Southern Illinois (29-20) and losing to Northern Iowa (36-34) in the playoffs.

Wofford (9-3) suffered a tough 38-35 loss to James Madison in the postseason and dropped one place to No. 9, while Cal Poly (8-3) descended from third to 10th with losses in its final two games.

Southern Illinois headed up the second 10 with a No. 11 ranking, followed by Central Arkansas, South Carolina State, Liberty, Harvard, Colgate, Elon, Maine, Eastern Kentucky and William & Mary.

Finishing up the final five spots in the poll were McNeese State, Texas State, Jacksonville State, Grambling and Prairie View.

No. 24 Grambling had been unranked in the previous poll and replaced Tennessee-Martin, which finished 26th in the voting. The Tigers beat Southern in the Bayou Classic and then downed Jackson State in the SWAC championship game.

No. 25 Prairie View (9-1) finished the season as a ranked team for the first time in the Sports Network poll. The Panthers earned their first-ever FCS ranking in the final week of the regular season.
