(Sioux Falls) Attorneys for the Sioux Falls Storm sent in their paperwork to the Department of Revenue in Pierre today.
They're appealing the amount of sales tax the team owes the state.
A hearing will be set later this month. This will keep the Storm's sales tax license in tact, and the game with SIoux City on July 11th is still on.
It's been a tough year for the Storm off the field.
We talked to Storm President Collin Steen about the future of this franchise.
The Sioux Falls Storm have been one of the most successful teams ever in minor league sports...winning four straight championships...which included a string of 40-straight wins at one point.
Collin Steen/Storm President "We've got a great product...and we want to continue that...which is why we'll get things headed in the right direction...and we plan on being a part of this community for a long time and have indoor football in Sioux Falls."
Sioux Falls businessman Kent Vurchevich has been the team's sole owner since 2002...Vurchevich is facing financial problems with his other ventures as well...there will likely be an ownership change in the offseason.
Steen "I can't disclose much about that as this time...but there is a ownership group who will take over and run the team next season."
While the franchise expects to get this sales tax mess cleaned up...earlier this season...when the league took away five wins...for not having workers compensation insurance...it proved to be too much to overcome...Sioux Falls will miss the playoffs.
Steen "The league didn't take us out of the playoffs...ultimately we lost those three games to Billings...and with those five losses...it kept us out...what's dissappointing...is for our coaches...players and fans...it's hurting them."
Storm head coach Kurtiss Riggs...who's in his 7th season with the team...has voiced his frustration with the front office...Steen says the franchise needs Riggs in it's future.
Steen "Our priority is Coach Riggs...the players respect and love him...we couldn't do the things we do on the field without him...he's a winner on and off the field."
Former Storm player Todd Tryon was recently named the Storm's GM.
He's leading an ownership group that will likely take over the team.
