Starting tonight...and on Sunday nights at 10 in July...we take a look back at KSFY Sports Classics.
Tonight we go back to June of 2000...when Mitchell native Mike Miller...who has just finished his sophmore year at Florida...got drafted in the first round...in the NBA Draft.
The draft was at the Target Center in Minneapolis.
David Stern/NBA Commissioner "With the 5th pick in the 2000 NBA Draft...the Orlando Magic select Mike Miller from the University of Florida.
Mike Miller "I think it's great...I didn't know what was going to happen...we thought we might be traded so we were sweating that...but everything turned out great."
Mike Miller is going to a team who seems to be on the way up.
The Magic went 41-41...but didn't make the playoffs this past season.
Miller is one piece...of their youthful plan.
Miller "They've got good young players...and I'll be part of that...and they may try to get some other players in free agency...there are good things going on...and I think we can do some special things in Orlando."
Miller also says...the transition to the pro game...will come easier...after playing in head coach Billy Donovans system at Florida for two seasons.
Miller "Billy Donovan did an unbelievable job...my game has improved 100-percent since I left South Dakota...with him I learned to play at a fast pace...in a fast system...I think i'll be able to step in and play right away."
Miller was part of an NBA Draft which had a record number of underclassman...who were picked by various teams.
Miller "I think players are developing earlier...and you see that in this draft...it has to be the right situation...and it was the right situation for me...and things worked out..I'm playing for the team i wanted to play for."
Miller went on to win NBA Rookie of the Year honors with the Magic.
In his third season with Orlando...he was traded to Memphis...where he'd play five more years with the grizzies.
Miller spent last season with the Timberwolves..and was recently traded to Washington where he'll be starting his 10th NBA season this fall.
