The Sioux Falls Stampede rallied from a three-goal deficit, but fell 4-3 in a shootout to the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders Friday night at the Sioux Falls Arena. Matt Lindblad had a goal and two assists while Matt Zarbo had a goal and an assist in the win. Ryan Misiak also scored in the win while Lino Chimienti stopped 27 shots in the game. The Stampede are now 8-1-3 on the season and 4-0-1 in their last five games.
The RoughRiders jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period when Eric Robinson scored on a breakaway at 11:24. Jeff Costello added a powerplay goal just two minutes later and suddenly the Riders had a 2-0 cushion on the Stampede in the first period.
In the second, Cedar Rapids added to their lead at 16:55 when Cason Hohmann wristed a shot through the legs of Chimienti to give the RoughRiders a three-goal cushion. The Stampede would respond though, just 19 seconds later to be exact, when Lindblad took the puck in the slot and wristed a shot past Cedar Rapids netminder Troy Grosenick to make it a 3-1 game. 11 seconds later Matt Zarbo made it a one goal game when he took a pass from Lindblad up the left wing boards and wristed a shot from the left circle into the upper left hand corner of the net. That goal got all 3,610 fans on their feet in celebration.
The Stampede would tie the game 8:18 into the third period on a goal by Ryan Misiak. Conor Allen brought the puck into the RoughRiders zone and found Lindblad in the slot who set up Misiak for a one-time shot that tied the game at three. The Stampede out shot the RoughRiders 15-3 in the third period and had several chances to win the game, but came up just shot. Matt Bailey rattled a shot off the crossbar with just over three minutes left and seconds later a shot trickled right on the Cedar Rapids goal line, but would not go across.
After a scoreless overtime in which the Stampede again had some good opportunities, the game went into a shootout where the Herd were outscored 4-3. Lindblad, Voran and Johnstone all scored in the shootout for the Herd who fell to 0-3 in shootouts this season. The Stampede out shot Cedar Rapids 33-31 on the night and finished 0 for 4 on the powerplay while Cedar Rapids was 1 for 4.
The Stampede will now prepare to face the first place Omaha Lancers, Saturday night at the Sioux Falls Arena. Game time is 7:05 PM. The Lancers are 13-1-0 on the season and have won 10 straight games.
