Augie Cross Country Competes in NCAA Championships

(Evansville, IND) The Augustana men’s cross country team took 10th place at the 2009 NCAA Cross Country National Meet in Evansville, Ind. The women, who were competing in their fourth-consecutive national championships, finished in 13th place.

The men finished with 313 points, just behind ninth place Harding with 96. Adams State took home the men’s title with 33 points.

Matt BraithwaiteJunior Matt Braithwaite led the way for the Vikings, posting a time of 32:35.9 to finish in 29th place. The effort earns Braithwaite All-American honors. Next was junior Tom Karbo, who also earned All-American with a 40th finish. He completed the course in 32:50.7.

Sophomore Austin Vande Berg was the next best Viking, coming in at No. 57 with a time of 33:09.3. Sophomore Travis Beniak came in with a time of 33:56.04 to earn 89th place and senior Matt Heesch finished just seven seconds behind Beniak with a time of 34:14.4, earning him 98th place.

Also running for the Vikings was junior Daniel Black, coming in 104th with a time of 34:14.4 and freshman Ryan Evans, who finished 128th in 34:44.8.

On the women’s side, Adams State took home the team title with 73
Tom Karbopoints. The Augie women took 13th place with 350 points.

Freshman Kyle Blakeslee was the top Viking woman, finishing in 29th place in 22:00.2 and earning All-American honors. Joining her is senior Molly Clark, who earned All-American with a 37th place finish and a time of 22:13.4.

Senior Jillian Tholen took 85th place, running the race in 23:06.6 and freshman Leah Hansen finished in 99th place in 23:19.2. Miriam Hovda was close behind her with a time of 23:20.8, earning her 100th place.

Senior Alyssa Anderson came in 104th with a time of 23:24.7 and freshman Annie Pfeifle ran in 24:06.9 to finish 139th.
