If you've ever picked up and moved to a new city, you know how hard it is, not only find your way around but to get everything hooked up. Perhaps the most important decision is finding health care providers that fit your needs. A couple in Lennox who recently relocated here found great help with Avera's Newcomer Program.
For Sally Boyd and Tom Zupet the move East River was made easier by Avera's Newcomer Program. Sally says, " I can't imagine moving here, not knowing anything in a city of 150,000 and you have to start from scratch. It's a real contribution to people like us."
The couple moved from Spearfish to Lennox in March. For Sally it was a bit of a homecoming. She has family here and used to live in this area 15 years ago, but Tom had never lived here. Tom says, "You kind of feel lost. This is a big city compared to where I'm from and when Michelle came to the door she was a total stranger and when she left 2 hours later she was a dear friend."
A year ago Avera started the Newcomer Program, Michelle Pellman manages it., she sends out pertinent information to help guide new residents in the right direction to finding health care, employment, city services plus entertainment and recreation options to fit their lifestyle.
Tom says, "For people like us who have come a long way you try to resettle, try and get your feet on the ground she came to the door like an angel she helped immensely.
Approximately 4,000 people move to Sioux Falls each year. In the last six months, the Newcomer Program has contacted over 1800 people.
