Cancer survivors may find they need help coping with the emotional as well as the practical aspects of their disease. They often turn to each other for encouragement during this difficult time. Nancy TerWee's cancer support group, A Time To Heal, is a place where she finds comfort during a difficult time.
"Sometimes we cry...a lot of the time we laugh," she said. "There's nothing like sharing with others that have had similar experiences." For over 15 years cancer patients had leaned on
Nancy for support. She does mastectomy fittings for Avera McKennan. Now she needs their support.
"When it happens to you it knocks your socks off," she said. "You feel devastated. You reach in there and find the courage inside you that you never knew you had."
But this support group isn't just sitting in a room talking about cancer. It's about making friends that can identify with your disease and help to cope. The group meets weekly. Participants are encouraged to commit to attending at least 10 of the 12 sessions.
