Avera McKennan Hospital opened its new emergency department In December. Staff and physicians designed the new unit to maximize efficiency but their ultimate goal was effective emergency care.
If you or a loved one need emergency care, rest assured you'll find plenty of resources locally.
Emergency Room Nurse Lisa Lindgren isn't what you'd call a bragger but she and other staff at Avera are excited about their new emergency room facility.
"This is really a first of its kind building process in this area. We traveled throughout the United States looking at different facility setups, and really found one other in St. Louis that kind of modeled this racetrack setup where the patients and family enter from one side, staff enter from the inner core." she said.
Patient-friendly design allows for privacy, efficient care and state of the art technology.
"We have the first digital x-ray, both portable and built-in suite in our department."
This project took 3 years to complete and they say it was well worth it. It will be open for business December 11th.
"We also took a look at our patient population," she said. "We not only look at trauma but orthopedic and mental health care. So we can take care of any patient in any room."
When phase 2 of the project is complete in the spring of 2008, there will be four more rooms for a total of 20, as well as an Internet cafe.
