Rehabilitation after a heart attack or other serious cardiac problem is designed to reduce the risk of further heart damage, or even death.

After two heart bypass surgeries Albert Benoit knew he had to make some changes. Cardiac rehab is a medically supervised program that helps heart patients like him recover quicker. It helps the former New Yorker stay active as he makes a new home in Sioux Falls.

"Some people think that just because you had bypass surgery you can go back to your old habits of eating but you can't you have to limit yourself," he said.

He's working out at the new Cardiac Rehab area at Avera Heart Hospital. It was moved and expanded to accommodate their growing needs. Hospital staff uses a three phase approach  to help patients get their heart back in gear. They also monitor their progress with diagnostic machines and one-on-one feedback.

Doctors say it's important to keep active well into your later years. Cardiovascular fitness has been proven to be as strong as medication in preventing heart attacks.
