A manufacturing company in Mitchell has such a low incidence of work injuries they've received a prestigious OSHA award 2 years in a row. They credit the Avera Queen of Peace Occupational Health Services.
Susanne Krout is practically like one of the employees here at Lucid Manufacturing in Mitchell who were making gun stocks when we were there (it's a big part of their business). As a RN, with Avera Queen of Peace Occupational Health Services, Susanne's job is to make sure these guys don't get hurt doing their job. She starts by doing pre-employment screenings.
Susanne Krout says, "They are measured for all essential functions of the job before anyone gets here. We know when they get to work what they can do."
The owners (Clem and Rex Boyd) of Lucid hired the team at OCC Health to head off potential problems before they become real ones. Susanne firmly believes in early reporting. She wants to know about any ache or pain before it becomes a serious injury.
Susanne says, "We come out and watch them work and what I'm watching for is how they do their job and then fix any ergonomic dangers in their techniques or awkward posture. Anything we can do to make the job safer.
When they say safety first at lucid they mean it. Before employees or visitors go out on the manufacturing floor they have to wear ear plugs. They even teach the proper way to put them in your ear for maximum benefit and then they test employees hearing once every year.
Lucid Owner and Operator Clem Boyd says, "We have very marginal injuries. We've had one cut in the last 3 or 4 years and for a manufacturing company that's a rare feet. I think we can attribute the safety program to OCC Health. It's been such a great fit."
Lucid has always operated under the motto: Safety, then quality followed by productivity in that order, never mixed. The owners believe they can do that, in part, because Avera's Occupational Health Team is so good at sticking to their guns on preventative care.
Lucid has earned OSHA's 2 year SHARP (Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program) award for establishing and implementing an exemplary safety and health management system .
