In November of 2008, Avera Children's began a unique program for children undergoing surgery allowing a parent to go with them to the OR for induction of anesthesia. In just over a year, 500 pediatric patients have benefited from the program called PPI, for Parental Presence for Induction. This program provides more of a family-centered care atmosphere, and helps decrease separation anxiety for our youngest patients.
Dr. Jennifer McKay from Avera McKennan joins us to explain why this is such an important program.
