The Avera McKennan Fitness Center is trying to find the greatest loser! Fashioned after the reality show "The Biggest Loser", trainers are helping fitness members shed some unwanted pounds. We met a 23 year old who is working hard to lose some weight.

Elizabeth Colbert from Sioux Falls is a 23 year old who carries with her a zest for life. She also admits she is carrying a few extra pounds than she should be so she is doing something about it.

Elizabeth says, "There is value in preventative medicine. At 23 I have to be thinking long term. I don't want to be battling cancer later in life or any of the other diseases associated with being overweight so I'm taking action now."

She jumped at the chance to join the Avera McKennan Fitness Center's Greatest Loser Program. It's a 10 week challenge for members to shed some unwanted pounds. 40 people were selected for 4 teams 10 people to a group.  Twice a week each group will work with their assigned trainer. Chad Gomarko is working with Elizabeth's group. They all started January 11th.

Athletic Trainer with the Avera McKennan Fitness Center Chad Gomarko says, "When you are first starting out to lose weight you need to start slow. The best way to get results is a combination of strength training and cardio and a healthy diet with nutrition."

Chad's challenge for the group last week was to drink 8 glasses of water a day. Elizabeth's challenge is to stop drinking a Diet Mt. Dew a day.

Elizabeth says, "Man last week was rough. I was working out 6 days a week which is my plan throughout the entire program. I did a ZUMBA class and for the first time I had fun exercising. It's a dance/aerobics class that kicked my butt for an hour. I'm really excited. It's a challenge and it's to push myself."

Elizabeth wants to lose 30 lbs in 10 weeks which she knows is an ambitious goal to meet by the time the challenge is done which is March 19th. She hopes to take home the title of greatest loser, but more importantly she will take with her a new and improved healthy lifestyle.

The winner of The Greatest Loser will also win a year-long membership to the Avera McKennan Fitness Center. Check out Elizabeth's blog at www.livingwellcommunity.com.
