Avera Medical Minute: Good Nutrition Starts at Birth Live 1/31/10
Cultivating good nutritional habits is important anytime, but a good place to start is right at birth. Breastfeeding for newborns has been shown to give babies an important leg-up on good nutrition plus it's easier to digest than formula and provides vital anti-bodies to help them fight illnesses.
Lactation specialist Charlotte Bachman Couser at Avera St. Luke's BirthPlace tells us more and more moms are choosing to breastfeed their babies in Aberdeen. She says it can be hard though since it's a learned experience for mom and baby. It's almost like learning to dance.
The registered nurse says, "Watch your babies. Babies are their guide and a leader in the process. The more you learn about taking your babies cues and what the baby is telling them the easier the breastfeeding becomes. We also tell people to spend as much time with their babies at the bedside when they are here as possible. "
Bachman Couser says a lot of new parents give up too easily on nursing. She says sometimes it takes a while for both baby and mom to get the hang of it. She says be patient and you both will reap the benefits.
