Avera Medical Minute: Unsung Heroes At The Heart Hospital Part 2
Steve Becker works in the Engineering/Maintenance Department at the Avera Heart Hospital.
In Part 1 of our Avera Medical Minute on the Unsung Heroes at the Avera Heart Hospital, we featured the women in housekeeping. In part 2 we sing the praises of the guys in blue who keep the hospital building up and running and make sure everything is working.
You could say Steve Becker and Kevin Bierwagen are "Jacks-of-all-Trades". They are 2 of the 7 employees in the Engineering Department at the Avera Heart Hospital. Downstairs in the engineer shop they are working on fixing a pump that circulates water throughout the hospital. The seals went out and it was leaking. Their duties don't end there.
Steve says, "Our main thing is mechanical. Three of us are heating-ventilation-air conditioning technicians. There are units on the rooftop and chill units we work on. We have a full time electrician. We have a guy who works on the generator. We do everything we can and when we can't we call for help, but most of it we can do."
Steve and his co-workers also help land the helicopters, transport patients if need be and are in charge of security. If they see someone who needs help unloading luggage, they'll gladly lend a hand.
Steve says, "We jump car batteries that go dead. We mow the lawn, move snow."
When Steve's not at work he's a volunteer firefighter in Harrisburg and a first responder so if you needed CPR he can do that too.
Steve says, "The thing I like best is being able to roam all over the hospital. We get to go in to the patients rooms and work on stuff. We get to talk to the patients and their families. We meet so many people from all walks of life. It's really so nice. We get in to everything. I love it."
And thank goodness they know how to fix everything. We love that!
