Men are notorious for not being good at going to the doctor either when they are sick or for regular check-ups. That's why the biggest employer in the community of Lyons, South Dakota hired a Registered Nurse with Avera Health Plans to help keep their male dominated work force healthy and at work.

40 year old Kenny Anglin from Sioux Falls is one of the 275 employees at Rosenbauer Central States in Lyons who makes custom built fire trucks. Kenny is part of a crew that puts the finishing touches on the truck by installing the side shelves, rollers and rails.  Kenny is good at his job because he pays special attention to detail. He's good to himself too by staying on top of his health.

Kenny says, "My dad and brother have high blood pressure so since Rosenbauer started offer the screenings for free here once a month I get it checked so see if mine gets high. That way I know sooner rather than later and can do something about it.

Rosenbauer signed on with Avera Health Plans. Included in the package they chose is having a Registered Nurse (Mary Hughes) on-site once a month for blood pressure screenings.

Mary says, "First I go in to the work place and assess their needs and look at their claims to see what they (employees) are sick with and then provide services to fit those needs. The nice thing about blood pressure screenings is you have privacy with that patient and that may open up the door to other things. For instance, I might ask them when was the last time they went to the doctor. Or they'll tell me about a pain they have in their shin and I can look at it and if need be refer them to a doctor.

Rosenbauer makes about 600 fire trucks that go all over the world. The employees are from all over the region so they don't have time to drive to Sioux Falls on their 30 minute lunch break to get something checked. That's why they say they appreciate having a nurse on site. Plus, most of the employees work long hours with 45 to 50 hour weeks and that's another reason they wanted to have someone on-site.

Karen Severtson is the Human Resources Manager for Rosenbauer Central States. She says, "I think the screenings are a great tool for employees to work on preventative aspects of their health. Some things may come up that they weren't aware of and sometimes they want to monitor their health. Healthy employees are a benefit to the company and to themselves."

For Kenny and for many of his co-workers, they are comforted knowing their blood pressure isn't going through the roof so can concentrate on the task at hand. They're glad Rosenbauer has enlisted Avera's help in keeping them healthy.
