A new program in Sioux Falls is filling a need in this community to help low income people move to a new location and out of their bad one. It's called the Moving Assistance Program (MAP) and since March volunteers have helped 30 families move to a new better place. Members of KSFY and Avera McKennan proudly volunteered to be the muscle for one of those moves in early September.
Paula says, "We don't have money to pay for moving expenses."
In March MAP became a vision realized and a God-send for so many low-income people in this community. For the Kestersons it sure is. Greg is blind and Paula is partially blind. Because of their circumstances the move was split in to two days and two crews. On a Thursday afternoon, a group of KSFY'ers packed up all their belongings and organized chaos moved in around them but they didn't mind a bit. (normally the move does not involve packing or unpacking)
Greg says, "Absolutely not. We wouldn't be able to do this without you great volunteers. It's so vital. Helping us move, helping us pack and they're just taking care of so many things for us."
KSFY is in charge of all the packing and MAP provides all the boxes, packing material and tape. Saturday morning Avera McKennan takes over the moving duties. The Avera McKennan marketing team and their husbands quickly filled up two trailers with the Kesterson's belongings from their 3 bedroom trailer. None of this would be a reality if it weren't for Craig Friedel. He is a full-time employee at Citibank who saw a need, saw it through and oversees every move.
Craig says, "A lot of people we encounter have a place to move to, but they don't have a car, no way to get across town and they can't afford to move. In order for them to get out of their current situation we fulfill that need so we take care of that piece of it. Otherwise, they could be on the waiting list for Sioux Falls Housing for another 2 to 3 years."
Greg and Paula are off to their new apartment. One free of upkeep and outdoor maintenance. They know they couldn't have gotten there without the help of the Moving Assistance Program. Those of us who volunteered from KSFY and Avera McKennan know we are better for having been a part of the move. It truly moved us all.
The Moving Assistance Program is always looking for a group of volunteers. You need 8 to 10 people and it won't take longer than 2 hours. We packed the whole house in 45 minutes and they loaded up and unpacked in less than 2 hours. Call the MAP Hotline at (605) 221-5951.
