Avera Medical Minute: Bartter's Syndrome Live 4/11/10
Shauna Miotke with Bentley at Avera Pediatric Specialists in Aberdeen.
A baby in Webster was born with such a rare kidney disease that even her grandmother and aunt who are both nurses had never heard of it.
Bentley Miotke has Bartter's Syndrome, a rare group of conditions that affect the kidney's and she's monitored weekly at Avera St. Luke's in Aberdeen. Her mom, Shauna, has become well-versed in the disease. She tells us that a defect in Bentley's kidney won't re-absorb electrolytes so she is very low in potassium and sodium and has to supplement. She basically urinates everything out without taking in any nutrients.
Shauna says, "We keep track of her 24 hour output. So we weight every diaper, record every cc she takes in so we know exactly what her daily intake is so we can calculate her output. She also has weekly labs drawn at Avera St. Luke's."
The Miotke's have to be extremely careful to keep Bentley healthy having the stomach flu can be life threatening for someone who needs to keep as much fluid in as possible.
