There's a reason there's a Christmas carol that boasts it's the most wonderful time of the year. It's the time when people give to others just because it's the right thing to do. The Avera McKennan Foundation hopes to be on the receiving end of your giving spirit. The hospitality they provide depends on your generosity.
Helen Henkin Major Gifts Officer with the Avera McKennan Foundation says, "The purpose of all three homes is to take care of patients family members who are here for long term stays. Those who may be getting chemo or radiation, oncology or going through rehab.. whatever it may be."
More than half (56%) of the patients who come to Avera McKennan are from outside of Sioux Falls and that can make it pretty tough to family to visit them in the hospital.
Sister Mary Thomas is Senior Vice President of Mission Services for Avera McKennan. She says, "It goes to our continuum of care. It fits our mission. The expression of hospitality is rooted in our Christian tradition for both the Benedictine Sisters and Presentation Sisters. It goes to treating the whole person not just the person who is ill. By attending to the whole family you are attending to the patient."
There is no greater need for support than when you are sick, hurt or healing and that's why the Walsh Family Village was built to keep family close by. It was a donor driven project and relies on those donor dollars to operate. With so many charities in need of money, the Avera McKennan foundation wants to remind you they need you too.
Sister Mary says, "When something works well you don't take notice of it and yet for things to keep working you need to pay attention so that resource is there in the future when you may need it."
The Walsh Family Village is a team effort in hope, hospitality and healing. They need you on the roster.
