Dorothy Hofmeyer from Orange City, Iowa first came to see Dr. William Cohen 10 years ago at the American Pain Relief Institute in Yankton on the campus of Avera Sacred Heart after suffering with wretching pain in her upper back after being t-boned in a car accident back in 1985.

"Then two years ago in February I was in another car accident and rather than monkey around I came right here and he was doing a new technique called radio frequency which has taken my pain away totally. Every 4 to 5 months I have the procedure done," said Dorothy.

"Different technique called radiofrequency in pulsing technique, totally non destructive. It's like fine tuning the nerves like you fine tune a radio," said Dr. Cohen.

Dr. Cohen specializes in radiofrequency treatments and performs the procedure in an operating room in his clinic. The patients are fully monitored and sedated while he pinpoints the nerve that's causing the problem with a needle and contrast dye.

"Going all the way down to the nerves coming off the spinal cord," said Dr. Cohen.

Most people dread going to the doctor, especially a doctor that's 2 hours from home, but not Dorothy, she says coming here has changed her life for the better.

"It sure has. Otherwise I would be sitting in a chair not doing much," said Dorothy.

On this visit, she gladly sits and chats with Dr. Cohen, knowing she will get up and get on with her life virtually pain free.

Dr. Cohen has treated thousands of patients from 27 states and 4 countries.
