There is no getting around it, life is hectic. With work and home and kids, the last thing on your list of to do's is often a workout and often times the first thing scrapped because of time constraints and child care issues. For busy health conscious parents, the Avera McKennan Fitness Center in Sioux Falls has a solution.
This is March Madness at it's finest! This is FitKids Child Care. Organized chaos for kids to burn off a little energy while mom and dad burn off a few calories.
Helen Block is the supervisor of FitKids. She says, "It provides a safe and fun place for kids to come and play with their friends so mom and dad can have a worry free workout. Parents can recharge and in return they are providing a really good example to their kids of taking care of themselves and their bodies."
The Avera McKennan Fitness Center's center court is transformed every morning into a place for a pint sized screaming match and these are screams of pure joy. For some members, it would be madness without FitKids.
Sue Mollison is a fitness center member who has young kids. She says, "FitKids gives me flexibility with my workouts. If I tried to do it at home I would be very limited. It would have to be very early before my husband gets up and that means it wouldn't happen very often. My 2 year old daughter Jacklyn loves it. I actually stopped by to say hi and she said go exercise. This is my time. I just laughed."
While parents are able to work out, it also instills at a young age in the kids that exercise is a good thing. It's a slam dunk.
Kate Althoff is another member with 4 kids. Three of them aren't in school yet . 5 year old Sebastian and 3 year old Alice love FitKids (7 year old Olivia was in school). Even 6 month old Margaret didn't shed a tear when we peaked in on her. Kate says if she wants to go to the fitness center she needs FitKids. She says, '"The best thing is the kids get wonderful attention so you can go work out. They get exercise. The staff is wonderful. Not once have I worried about leaving a baby or any of the kids. They are attentive to their needs. They are taken care of very well. Even in the summer to get them all out on a walk takes forever to get them all rounded up and ready. I would not get nearly as much exercise without FitKids as I do."
FitKids Child Care is available for kids ages 6 weeks to 8 years old and there is a 2 hour limit per day.
The hours are:
Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm
Saturday 8:00 am to 2:00 pm
