If you are a parent of a young child, you know that at some point you're going to have to have "the talk". And we suspect either you or your kids might be dreading it. Avera McKennan is trying to help you get that conversation started.
Let's Talk Again For Girls is a follow up class just for middle school aged girls and their parents sponsored by Avera McKennan. Julie Evans, Abstinence Education Coordinator with Truth4Youth, is leading this session.
Julie says, "The main thing it's all about the small choices you are making everyday. Sometimes it's the small choices like who your friends are that can lead to bigger choices that can get you into trouble. Smoking can lead to a situation where alcohol is involved which can lead to a situation with the opposite sex then all of a sudden all those things aver very connected so we talk about all of them.
No topic is voodoo either. Anatomy or how far is too far? How do you get STD's? If the girls ask they will answer honestly no holds barred.
Julie says, "I'm in a lot of different classrooms speaking and what I always hear from students is they are just so glad someone is being honest and what the best thing is to do. If we're afraid to talk about it they are wondering what to do so it's best to talk about it."
Brenda Tigert and her 12 year old daughter went to both let's talk classes and both of them learned a lot.
Brenda says, " At first my daughter dreaded coming to this. Not knowing if she'd know anyone and being embarrassed, but even on our second night she said she was really glad that we came and it wasn't as bad as she thought it was going to be. We live an hour away so on our last drive home she talked and talked and talked and she was the main instigator so it's a great way to open a tough topic."
And hopefully put the kibosh on any behavior that could have a bad consequence.
