On May 17th Avera McKennan kicked off it's version of "The Biggest Loser" with a community wide weight loss challenge. 2,015 people (370 teams) are participating in the 12 week on-line event to help people adopt an active, vibrant lifestyle. So far the group has lost 4,000 pounds. Since we're at the half way point, we check back in on the Bartels and their progress.
Doug and Jenny Bartel, along with their 3 children, are warming up on the track at the Avera McKennan Fitness Center in Sioux Falls. In their effort to lose weight and get healthy, both say consistency has been their biggest challenge.
Jenny says, "Convincing myself to get to the gym. Doug is supportive and makes all kinds of time for me to come and I make all kinds of excuses not to."
Doug says, "You know the 1st week you are excited to work out, it's fun, it's new. The 2nd week you know it's good for you. By the 3rd week you are tired of doing this. I miss my spot on the couch. I miss not eating certain foods and I want to eat them again. Everything seems to be this destructive like mentality so I'm pushing through that realizing you may not like working out and getting healthy but honestly I didn't like being fat and unhealthy either so I have to balance it out and I chose healthy."
For Doug cardio has been key. He spends 40 minutes 6 days a week on the treadmill and spends the rest of his hour and a half work out doing weight training.
Doug says, "I find that if I work out in the morning I eat better in the day because I suffered early in the day so it helps in that way."
It must be working. Doug's lost 23 pounds so far. Jenny's down 6.
Jenny admits it hard. She says, "There are lots of other things I think are important so it's hard to find time out of the day and make myself a priority when for so many years that's not been the case."
Six weeks down, six more to go and we will continue to go the distance with them on their journey to self improvement and cheering them on every step of the way!
