June 9, 2010 (Sioux Falls, SD) - Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center announced today that champion cyclist and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong will be the keynote speaker for the events and gala to officially open and dedicate the new Avera Cancer Institute this fall.
Armstrong, a seven-time Tour de France champion, is not just a superb athlete, he's also an exceptionally dedicated advocate for cancer research and living testament to the human spirit's ability to overcome disease. He is a best-selling author and founder of the LiveStrong Cancer Support Foundation.
"Lance is in a class by himself in regard to fighting and beating cancer," said Fred Slunecka, Avera McKennan President & CEO. "We're excited to have a world class person be on hand to witness the opening of a world class facility."
Armstrong is scheduled to appear during a black tie (optional) gala to be held Friday evening October 29. The gala and Armstrong's speech will be open to the public and tickets are available today. "We feel the Avera Cancer Institute is truly our gift to the community," said Slunecka. "It's important to make this event available to anyone who wants to attend, not just invited guests."
