As our society ages, more adult children are now taking care of their ailing parents. Avera Marshall offers adult day services to help working families care for their aging loved ones during the day in a safe, supervised, activity filled environment.
Shirley Grimes lives with her daughter Marsha Rose in Marshall and when Marsha goes to work in the morning Shirley comes to Avera Marshall's adult day services which is a licensed center housed at Morningside Heights (a long term care facility in Marshall, MN). It has been a real blessing for both of them.
Marsha Rose says, "We call it camp and the reason mom comes here is they provide the care she needs while still enabling her to live in the community with us."
Jackie Esping is a LPN and helped start the program 10 years ago and manages the program today. She tells us the need for adult day services grows as the community ages.
Esping says, "It's where people come for socialization and we can help monitor and provide medical assistance. We take care of lining up doctor's visits and tracking their meds. It keeps them out of the nursing home setting and keeps them independent in their own living style."
One of the great things about Avera Marshall's adult day services is they provide activities throughout the day. Another convenient aspect is they'll pick up clients in the morning and take them home in the evening.
Esping says, "It makes them feel healthy and makes them feel good about themselves. It makes them feel alive."
And the adult children who care for them, feel good knowing their parents are in good hands.
Marsha Rose says, "Coming here is wonderful. They provide a nutritious breakfast and lunch, activities that engage her, social interaction and we know mom is getting the care she needs when she is not with us."
Marsha's lunch hour is nearing to a close so she'll say good bye to her mom, head back to work and finish out her day without having to worry a bit about how her mom is doing. A comfort, a service worth every penny.
