We've given you a look inside the soon-to-open Avera Surgery Center located on the 4th floor of the new Avera Cancer Institute building. This time we are going more in-depth on some of the equipment and high-tech tools that will be used for the same day surgeries.

The new Avera Surgery Center houses 8 state-of-the-art operating suites. Each room is 650 square foot in size (a typical OR is 450 sq. ft.).  What surgeons and support staff says makes the OR's so "sweet" is the size, amenities and technology offered in them.

Avera Surgery Center Outpatient Services Director Daren Smith says, "We really concentrating on the latest technology so if you are coming in for a laparoscopy or arthroscopy the camera they use to look inside your body is high-def and the monitors are high definition. The technology that's been integrated together gives them a better diagnostic picture."

Avera McKennan General Surgeon Dr. Wade Dosch says, "As time has gone on we gotten away from a lot of open surgeries and have gone to laparoscopic surgeries which have added a lot of equipment which typically crowds the OR. These rooms are so spacious, as you can see, and the advantages of that are the laparoscopic monitors and devices are mounted in the ceiling which is very handy. It frees up more space for us to move patients in and out and move other equipment that may be needed in and out."
Avera McKennan Assistant VP of Perioperative Services and Anesthesia Patty Jagoe tells us, "We service all patients from adults to children. Kids have the option to drive a vehicle to the OR with their parent and they can watch a movie as they go to sleep. It makes it a lot more friendly and calming and familiar to them."

Avera has gone to great lengths to make sure the whole process from checking in to going home and everything in between is more comfortable and easier. They know the last thing you need on surgery day is more stress.  Knowing your surgeon has the best tools for the job should help.

July 6th will be the first day for patients at the new Avera Surgery Center.
