The Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls now offers vascular screenings in conjunction with Planet Heart. If you come in for the heart check program, for an extra $25 you can now also get screened for an abdominal aortic aneurysm, peripheral arterial disease and stroke (carotid artery) too. You won't find these kinds of tests for cheaper prices and patients will tell you that the peace of mind it provides is priceless.
Monte Bertsch is just the guy the health care providers at the Avera Heart Hospital want to see. The 54 year old came in before he had any symptoms of heart attack, stroke or aneurysm.
Monte says, "I came in for a couple of reasons. One is my age, I'm getting up there and I want to make sure I'm staying healthy and we have some heart disease in our family."
Monte's father has had two open heart surgeries; a triple and a quadruple bypass. By outward appearances Monte is the picture of health, but since we can't see what's going on inside our arteries, he thought he better get the pros to get a look and that's exactly what Registered Vascular Technician Val Josephsen is doing.
I rarely talk about prices in our Avera Medical Minute, but this one bears talking about. To get the three screenings done (carotid artery to see if you are risk for stroke, abdominal aortic aneurysm and peripheral artery disease it costs $50 here. If you get it in conjunction with Planet Heart it's $75. Planet Heart alone is $50 (over an $800 value). That is a bargain.
Beth Weber, Avera Heart Hospital Director of Imaging says, "In these days of economic hard times, it's important to offer preventative medicine for our community at economic prices."
Monte went with the combination package. After his vascular and stroke screening, he went through Planet Heart. Among other things, RN Deb Howell checked Monte's cholesterol and blood sugar levels. She also sent him to get a CT scan for a calcium score (crucial to the early detection of heart disease). In a hour and 15 minutes Monte was all finished up.
So a trip to Planet Heart with the addition of vascular screenings not only not time consuming, it's inexpensive and has the potential to save your life. You can't afford not to do it.
Vascular screenings are done Tuesday through Friday at the Avera Heart Hospital. To make an appointment CALL 877-AT-AVERA or visit www.southdakotaheart.com
