The largest single building project in the city of Sioux Falls is happening on the campus of Avera McKennan. The new Avera Cancer Institute is on schedule to open in November and is on budget. We toured the facility under construction with the Senior VP of Environmental Services.
The new Avera Cancer Institute on the southwest side of Avera McKennan's campus is only months away now from its fall completion. The 4th floor which houses the Avera Surgery Center is already done and opened for patients July 6th. Senior Vice President for Environmental Services Dick Molseed understands that no one ever really wants to be in this building, but the reality is many of us will need all the services offered here.
Molseed says, "It's a unique balance between the clinical needs that we have to have and making it a comfortable welcoming and inspiring type of place to deal with all the different emotions. Some people will be celebrating here and some will be getting not so good news here. We've build in different spaces in the building, spaces for a lot of people to be in and gather in along with the tremendous doctors, nurses and technicians who are here and are the best in the region."
To celebrate 100 years of service, you'll find 100 green stones imbedded in the floor to honor patients and caregivers.
In the wall, you'll also find 10 words of inspiration (Faith, Hope, Dignity, Grace, Rejoice, Trust, Peace, Serenity, Love, and Praise) and in the atrium visions of familiarity to welcome you.
Molseed says, "We've taken a lot of local concepts with the building and a lot of the materials are from South Dakota, close to Sioux Falls. We've adopted themes of East River and West River.
The third floor is almost done and will accommodate women's health including a breast health center, gynecological oncology and spacious infusion suites.
Molseed says, "And there is literally going to be a green roof for people in the infusion center on the 3rd floor will be able to look out on the roof and see a roof covered with 85% plant life. That will also reduce the cost it takes to cool the atrium below that."
When it's done, the $90 million green building will house the latest technology married with 5-Star hotel amenities. Avera wants you to have the best, when you are fighting one of the worst diseases.
We want to remind you that Lance Armstrong is coming to Sioux Falls on October 29th to be the keynote speaker for the Avera Cancer Institute Gala on October 29th.
