Avera Heart Hospital Registered Dietitian Nikki Ver Steeg.
A lot of attention is focused on losing weight in the springtime to get ready for swim suit season, but being over weight is hard on your heart year round. Now is the best time to make a lifestyle change. We asked Registered Dietitian Nikki Ver Steeg at the Avera Heart Hospital how to get started.
Nikki Ver Steeg says, "The biggest thing when starting a weight loss challenge or approaching weight loss is to make small steps. This way you make it part of your permanent lifestyle instead of just something you do until you lose the weight. You want it to be something you can do and maintain throughout your lifetime. Definitely having a support system is ideal. By having others to lean on and whether that's a healthcare professional like myself or just friends, you can do this with these people who can encourage you to make these changes with and to continue.
Q: When you say make small changes what do you mean? Do you mean don't cut out an entire food group at once? Give us some examples.
A: You need to start exercising and you can do that by walking to the end of the driveway. Start small then you can say I did it. Who cares how long it takes, but you can achieve it. Modify your diet. Plan on eating 3 meals a day and don't skip breakfast and add protein to each meal. Try to cut out processed types of carbohydrates and processed types of foods and eat at home more office. Little things like that."
And don't think you are going to lose 50 lbs. in a month! For more information call 877-AT-AVERA.
