Groton senior is smart with big heart

Posted: Updated:

Today's Scholar of the Week is setting the bar high and going for it.

His teacher's say it's not just Sam Smith's brains that will make him successful, but also his determination and good heart.

"Not a whole lot of free time, but I enjoy the free time I have," says Sam Smith.

Soccer, basketball, FCA, debate, and a full class load including biology 2, Spanish 2, personal finance and honors English.

You can see why Sam Smith doesn't get much free time.

So he made this past summer count.

"I was able to take a trip to the black hills with friends and do some sightseeing. It was a fun time."

Sam's ambitious schedule will likely lead him to an ambitious future.

He hopes to study bio pre-med at either South Dakota State or USD.

"Hopefully I'd like to be a doctor one day and have a nice house and a family."

So how does a high school senior muster up all the energy and enthusiasm it takes to make a busy schedule like Sam's work?

"I like to challenge myself and make myself better and see what I can do in this world," says Sam.

And his teachers know that whatever he does, Sam Smith will be successful.

"Dedication. He works very hard. School comes first. He wants to do well and he strives to do that," says his principal Todd Sweeter.

Northern Electric Cooperative, a local Touchstone Energy Cooperative, is giving Sam a hundred dollar scholarship for his effort.
