Orthopaedic Consultants/Alvine Foot and Ankle Center in Sioux Falls announced they partnering with Avera and will now be called CORE Orthopedics Avera Medical Group. They also made history by performing the first of it's kind total ankle replacement surgery in the state and region on November 3rd.
Dr. Greg Alvine with CORE Orthopedic Avera Medical Group says, "The STAR ankle replacement is a new ankle replacement to the U.S. but it's popular in Europe. It was approved here in May of 2009 as an option for patients with ankle arthritis versus fusion or other options on the market.
Q: This is brand new on the market, you did the first surgery yesterday so what's the advantages of the STAR?
A: I think the advantages to STAR is it's a mobile bearing unit. There is a plastic bearing in the ankle. When you look at the x-ray you can see. That will hopefully allow less polyethylene wear. Those wearing out chances are what we're hoping these are better at than other style of ankles. But it's too soon to tell.
Q: Who is a candidate for the STAR?
A: Mainly, patients with ankle arthritis that don't have contra indications like diabetes and bad vascular disease and previous infections. For ankle arthritis we would often times fuse the ankle which is still a reasonable option, but ankle replacement offers other options and helps maintain motion and preserve the joints around the ankle and prevents them from becoming degenerative."
