Leola senior likes hunting and engineering

Posted: Updated:

School, football and wrestling keep Douglas Kallas busy enough.

Our Scholar of the Week also works on the family farm and can often be found out hunting with his bow or rifle.

Classes like web production, entrepreneurship and drafting and being president of the Future Business Leaders of America are getting Douglas Kallas ready for his future.

"You work on business plans and it gets you ready for the business world," explains Douglas.

Until recently Douglas was also busy with 4-H showing cattle, and he still works on his family's farm - a cattle and grain operation just outside Leola.

But Douglas sees a future outside the cattle barns.

"I think I'm gonna major in engineering - not really sure."

This Leola High School senior wants to go to either NDSU or SDSU.

"I like to design stuff - any old thing," says Douglas.

Which is leading him toward the mechanical side of things.

"I think I'm gonna work toward mechanical engineering design stuff, that's more efficient to use."

But outside the classroom - Douglas loves the thrill of the hunt.

Put a bow or rifle in his hands and he's a happy guy.

With a bright future, according to those who know him.

"He's going to do something really well - whatever he chooses. I'm excited when he comes back to see what Doug has been up to," says Pamela Fauth.

A hundred dollars is headed Doug's way from the F.E.M Electric Association, a local Touchstone Energy Cooperative.
